Ginny Till – Co-Founder and Designer

Ginny has been in love with sewing and fabrics since she was little, learning many skills from her Nan, an accomplished seamstress and wedding dress maker. Her passion continued and, combined with her love of art, led her to study for a degree in textile design at Huddersfield University.

After graduating, a move to London presented new opportunities which led to a successful career in media, marketing and PR – such is life!

Throughout her life Ginny has continued to sew, designing clothes and creating bespoke soft furnishings for friends and family – ‘you should do this for a living’ is a phrase often heard!

“Sewing has always been my passion, working with fabrics, getting immersed in the process and creating something unique and beautiful!

A few years ago my partner’s mum, knowing of my love for sewing, brought me a bundle of amazing Aso-oke fabrics from Nigeria to see if I could do anything with them!  I was in my element, working with these lustrous hand woven fabrics, creating patchworks and appliqué pieces.

Impressed by my creations, my partner’s brother-in-law, Frank, presented me with some Kente fabrics – not wanting to miss an opportunity to elevate Ghanaian artistry! More sewing fun for me!

Fast forward a few years and many, many cushions later, my partner Olu and I have decided to take the plunge and put our combined talents to the test with the launch of Afrique Fabrique London.”

Olu Obikoya – Co-Founder and Technical Director

Olu has textiles in his blood! Growing up in Lagos his mum ran a successful bridal fashion business. After-school hours were spent rummaging around fabrics, learning to cut out material and attempting to sew on old Singer machines – anything to stop the boredom!

Happy to leave the textile business behind him, Olu opted for a career in corporate IT.

Little did he realise that some day he would be using his IT skills to build an e-commerce website for his own textile business !

“My passions are science, technology and football, so a career in IT was a pretty good, although not mind-blowing, career choice!  Having spent 20 years in corporate IT, I started to think more broadly about the next phase of my work life.

Ginny was so excited and eager to use the Aso-Oke fabrics, we decided to make personalised cushions for family members for Christmas presents. Everyone loved them. The creative spark had been ignited – but there were so many fabrics to use and we were not going to get away with dishing out cushions for presents every year!

Having previously built a simple website for Ginny’s marketing business, this was an area I was interested in exploring further. The concept for the bespoke cushion designer emerged when Ginny was making a cushion for my daughter Millie’s birthday… they were choosing from different Kente designs and trying them against a range of backing fabrics. Millie suggested Ginny should launch a ‘build your own cushion’ website – and here we are…”
